The wool used in Mashad rugs is softer than that found in most other types of Persian rugs. Mashad is a city in the east part of Iran. The colors used are exclusively red and blue as the dominating colors with ivory or khaki used to provide interesting contrast. The background is typically deep, dark red with dark blue highlights found in the center medallion, corner pendants and border. Some rugs are an all-over traditional pattern. The red background is a distinguishing characteristic of Mashad rugs.
Cleaning Recommendations Always use a professional rug cleaners. Self-cleaning methods like carpet shampooing are discouraged. Clean spills immediately by blotting with a clean sponge or cloth. Avoid use of beater-bar type vacuum as they create friction, which speeds up the wear on pile rugs, and some may cause yarns to pull or snag. If snagging does occur, trim to same level of surrounding fibers. Care and Maintenance We recommend rug pads for use with all rugs to help extend the rug’s life, protect the surface underneath, and help keep rug in place. Pile shedding is a normal characteristic of quality area rugs, particularly with wool and other natural fibers. Some rugs shed more than others.
