New York, NY -- Kalaty Rug Corporation will debut six new rug collections at the upcoming Atlanta Market, the most extensive product introduction at a single show in the company's history. Three of the company's new collections - Sonata, Allegro and Encore - are hand crafted from premium hand-spun wool in an eclectic array of colors, patterns and designs with a distinctive antique character, the result of an aging process that gives each rug a unique heirloom quality.
Other Kalaty collections new for July include: Nirvana, a group of transitional designs with a combination of wool and art silk; Sundance, a collection of Arts & Crafts as well as traditional patterns; Antalya, a group of antique reproduction rugs in premium wool featuring Turkish-style weaves. "We are confident that our dealers, interior designers and consumers will appreciate the richly aged look and feel of the rugs in Sonata, Allegro and Encore," says Ariel Kalaty, a company spokesman. "These new collections offer the character and qualities found in antique rugs but at a price point that is more affordable than antiques. Sonata, Allegro and Encore rugs complement virtually all popular décor trends from traditional to vintage to transitional."
"Additionally, our aggressive design and marketing programs are paying off for us and for our dealers," Ariel Kalaty adds. "We have experienced a positive response to the Kalaty Custom Color program, which debuted in Atlanta in January of this year, as well as to the opening of our High Point showroom in April. It seems to us that this is a good time to make a strong statement with new product introductions, and we are hopeful that our customers will appreciate the direction we are taking." MARIETTA, GA, June 28, 2010-Every little bit helps and when it comes to removing oil from water, wool has been shown to soak up 40 times its weight in oil, according to an online BBC News magazine article.
Wools of New Zealand put out a call that was answered by some of its U.S. carpet manufacturer partners to donate wool waste for use in the Gulf coast oil spill clean-up efforts. J. Mish, Woolshire, Woolen Resources and Creative Accents have all shipped wool waste material to Matter of Trust (matteroftrust.org), an organization that is warehousing the fiber and making them into booms.
"Wool is a highly efficient oil adsorbent (meaning the oil clings to the many tiny scales on every strand)," says Elise Demboski, executive director of Wools of New Zealand in North America. "It is natural, biodegradable, hydrophobic, buoyant and has large retaining capacity. This makes it much more effective for use in booms then typical polypropylene fillers."
Wool has been called on before for this same purpose. As reported by BBC News, New Zealand sent wool booms to the Persian Gulf during the first Iraq war in 1991. The wool booms successfully helped clean up the million tons of oil released by retreating Iraqi soldiers.
"I applaud our partners for donating their wool waste, which is typically sold or used to make recycled cushion," shares Demboski. "Instead, they are shipping the wool, at their own expense, to warehouses in the Gulf of Mexico. The wool is joined by thousands of pounds of hair, fleece and feathers that will be turned into 25 miles of boom.
Wools of New Zealand partners are happy to help. "We didn't think about it twice," says Don Karlin, vice president of sales and marketing for J. Mish. "When Elise contacted us, we were able to ship 3,000 pounds of wool waste to the warehouse. This is a devastating situation and we want to help anyway we can."
According to Lisa Gautier, president of Matter of Trust, the warehouses are now full and donations are being held until further notice. Matter of Trust volunteers are busy making booms that are being deployed in Florida and Alabama. Wools of New Zealand partners have been put on a call list and are standing by ready to help when there is a need for more wool. |

Wools of New Zealand announced the launch of an interactive, online training college designed to enhance the wool skills of retailer salespersons and mill representatives.
The Wool Benefits College is filled with valuable information culled from the accumulated knowledge of wool experts. Within the course are 10 modules that address the natural properties of wool, including wool fiber, sheep breeds, wool vs. synthetics and natural integrity. A final exam completes the course.
"Our new wool college is an excellent training tool," explains Hallie Cobb, training and marketing director for Wools of New Zealand. "We encourage everyone associated with the sale and marketing of wool to take the course. Today's consumers are savvier than ever, especially when it comes to family health and the environment. This tool gives retail salespersons the knowledge they need to sell wool with greater confidence."
Upon hearing of the Wool College, store owners at Mercer Carpet One in Westminster, MD required their entire sales staff, in all three locations, to complete the course. One of the first graduates, Bob Wolf of Mercer Carpet One, has been in the carpet industry for 35 years. "The Wool College proved to be very beneficial," says Wolf. "I found the course to be enlightening and interesting. In addition to learning some new facts, I was reminded of several wool benefits that I look forward to sharing with our customers."
The Wool College is open to all retailers, but only those participating in Wools of New Zealand's Premier Partner Program will be able to promote their sales staff as "Wool Specialists" once they have successfully completed the college. This designation is reserved exclusively for Premier Showrooms, mill representatives and mill agents who are partnering with Wools of New Zealand to promote and sell wool carpets and rugs.
The Wool College is free and accessible via Wools of New Zealand's website at www.woolsnz.com. Showrooms interested in learning more about Wools of New Zealand's Premier Partner Program can contact Hallie Cobb at
